About Us

The MSU Denver Counseling Center is dedicated to serving enrolled MSU Denver students with accessible, short-term, goal-focused mental health care. Our services include individual and group therapy, crisis support, case management, outreach, and psychoeducation.

To serve as many students as possible while still providing meaningful care, our model is Short-Term, Goal-Focused Individual Counseling. Students set specific goals and work toward them intensively within a semester. We also offer a wide range of group therapy options, which research shows can be especially effective for college students.

Together, these services form a strong foundation of mental health support for the MSU Denver community.

Mission Statement

Promoting student growth and success through accessible, culturally-responsive, mental health care.

Scope of Service

The Counseling Center provides a wide range of therapeutic interventions for MSU Denver students. Our clinical model is to provide short-term, goal-focused, individual counseling, and unlimited group therapy sessions, as appropriate. When a student’s needs require a more intensive level of care, the Counseling Center partners with the student to transition to resources within the community.

Situations that may require a transition of care include:

1. A need, or request to be seen more than once a week for individual counseling.

2. A need, or request, for uninterrupted individual services from semester to semester.

3. A need, or request for a treatment modality not provided by the Counseling Center.

4. Individuals who have demonstrated symptom reduction but desire ongoing regular support.

5. An indication that short-term counseling may be detrimental.

6. An inability or unwillingness to develop short-term counseling goals.

7. Non-compliance with treatment recommendations, including regular session attendance.

8. The presence of one or more of the following, such that the best treatment would be an intensive outpatient program (IOP) or a higher level of care (Inpatient care).

a. Alcohol and Other Drug Addiction

b. Eating Disorders

c. Chronic thoughts and/or attempts of self-injury or suicide.

d. Other chronic and/or serious mental health concerns that require a level of care that extends beyond appropriate short-term treatment.

9. A request for:

a. psychological testing or evaluations to attain accommodations through the Access Office.

b. Documentation for an emotional support animal.
